Mulch calculator
Estimate how much mulch you need for a garden bed, flower bed, tree ring, or landscape area before you buy bags.
- Convert area and depth into volume
- Compare liters, cubic meters, and cubic feet
- Round up bags with a visible buffer
Formula and method
Mulch volume formula
volume = area × depth; bags = volume ÷ bag volumeThe calculator converts area and depth to metric volume, adds the selected buffer, then converts the total into common volume units.
Bags are rounded up because mulch is normally purchased in whole bags.
Assumptions
- Depth is treated as even across the area.
- Bag size comes from your own store label.
- The buffer covers settling and uneven edges.

How deep should mulch be?
Many garden beds use about 5-8 cm or 2-3 inches, but the right depth depends on material, weeds, and plant needs.
Should I include a buffer?
Yes. A small buffer helps with uneven beds, edging, and settling after watering.
Can I use square feet?
Yes. Choose ft² and inches; the calculator still shows volume in liters, cubic meters, and cubic feet.
Does this know local bag sizes?
No. Enter the bag volume printed by your store or supplier.
