Dog food calculator
Estimate a practical daily feeding amount from your dog's weight, life stage, activity, and food label calories.
- Uses the RER calorie baseline
- Shows grams or cups per day
- Splits the result by meals
Formula and method
Dog calorie method
RER = 70 × weightKg^0.75; daily calories = RER × multiplierThe multiplier is conservative and changes with puppy/adult/senior status, activity, and neuter status.
Food amount is calculated by dividing daily calories by kcal per 100 g or kcal per cup.
Assumptions
- RER is 70 × weightKg^0.75.
- Life stage, activity, and neuter status apply transparent multipliers.
- Food density must come from your package label.
Practical examples
Adult medium dog
18 kg adult, normal activity, 360 kcal/100 g
Roughly 240-260 g per dayActive dog
25 kg active adult, 380 kcal/cup
Higher daily calories and cups per dayFAQ
Is this veterinary advice?
No. It is a planning estimate. Puppies, pregnant dogs, sick dogs, and dogs with medical conditions need a veterinarian.
Why does energy density matter?
Two foods can have very different calories per gram or cup, so label calories are essential.
Should I use cups or grams?
Grams are usually more precise. Cups are useful only when your food label gives kcal per cup.
What if my dog gains or loses weight?
Adjust with a veterinarian or qualified nutrition professional, especially if weight change is sudden.
